A difficult week

On Monday Jeanne and I attended Julius London's funeral at
Fraser Meadows. It was a ritual Jewish ceremony. I spoke
briefly with Julie's son, Richard. We did not go to the
reception after the service.

Jeanne had to catch the bus at 1:20 PM to go to DIA, but we had
time for lunch at Dolan's. After lunch I dropped her at the bus
station and then went on home. I felt sad; I'll miss Jeanne and
saying a permanent goodbye to an old friend is always difficult.

On Tuesday Robert had a dentist appointment at 7:30 AM and
I had an appointment at my doctor's lab to have tests made.
From the doctor's office I went to Longmont to meet with Mike
of Longs Peak Sprinklers to talk about him taking out the ratty
bushes in the front yard of our rental there. He gave me an
estimate and I talked briefly with Teri to let her know the
bushes would be coming out the next day.

The next day, Wednesday, Teri called me to say the city workers
were there to move the water meter from the basement to a pit in
the front yard and they had agreed to take out the bushes. I
called Mike, but couldn't reach him and then Teri called me back
to say Mike's crew had showed up so the city workers had quit to
let him do his thing. Oh, well. I'm sure we are keeping the
economy going. I do have pictures of the whole mess. Robert and
I will drive over there today to see how it all looks.

I met Suzanne at her house after talking with Mike on Tuesday.
It was blowing so hard we opted not to walk so drove to Le Peep's
where we had brunch. By that time I was really hungry.

After lunch I spent the afternoon at Jared's office. I took
several interesting phone calls.

I was at Jared's office on Thursday, too.

Friday evening Bob Gray came for dinner. We had a good time
talking computers and he and Robert are trying to design a system
so that Robert can monitor the battery charge on his computer in
the house through a wireless connection.

Yesterday, Saturday, I was tired (Bob stayed until after 1 AM)
and therefore cold so I turned up the heat in my office. Soon, a
terrible smell emanating from the small closet within the closet
in my office. I had been noticing a slight unpleasant smell
before, but this was really ripe! Robert and I took everything
out of my closet so that he could get to the inner closet where
the water heater is. The floor there was damp and the smell was
terrible! We can't get at the smell without removing the water
heater and since the water heater seems to be leaking he called a
plumber to come and replace the water heater. We hope we'll be
able to remove the dead whatever at that time. In the meantime
I've moved to the computer room. All the windows in the house
are open. Thank goodness it is a warm, sunny day. The smell
is hardly noticeable. The living room is full of my coats and my
photograph albums. I have more than 20 albums and they take a
lot of space. Fortunately, we don't have any one invited for
dinner in the near future.

On Wednesday last Sue Berkenbush's daughter called to say that
Sue's husband had died. He has been in a hospital in Boston for
about 10 days. He had an infection in a heart valve and Sue had
been told that if they didn't operate he would die, but they
couldn't operate until they got the infection somewhat under
control. Neither happened. Sue is a very dear friend from
college. We've been close for all those years. I've promised
we'll come sometime soon, but after the funeral and after her
children and all the other relatives have left and she is alone.
We'd like her to come to Boulder for awhile and she seemed open
to that. I can only imagine what she is going through. I can't
imagine my life without Robert and she and Dick were that close,
too.

It's been a very difficult week.
